Are Your Child’s IGCSE Grades Satisfactory?
For many parents, the Cambridge IGCSE is more than just another examination. It is a key academic milestone that will significant affect the route a child takes to A-Levels, Foundation courses, Scholarships and finally University. However, there is one worry that parents hold in Malaysia: Are my child’s IGCSE grades really strong enough?
In fact, passing and being competitive go hand in hand. A good pass might be enough to get into some pre-university courses, but higher universities and scholarship bidders look for a lot more than average results.
In this guide we discuss the IGCSE scheme of grades, what a good grade in IGCSEs is and what parents can do to help their children achieve a better grade before it’s too late.
The Cambridge IGCSE Grading System is explained.
The A–G vs. 9–1 Scales
Cambridge IGCSE is in the process of rolling out a new ‘numerical’ grading system 9–1, alongside the current scale of A–G, on a worldwide basis.
Using the A–G scale:
- A to A are indicative of top performance
- B, C are considered as good passes
- The low passes from D to G are undone.
- U means ungraded
The new 9–1 scale is higher than the previous standard (A); Grade 9 is even higher and Grade 4 is deemed to be a standard pass.
While the A–G grading system is still the predominant one in Cambridge around the world, parents should be aware that grade boundaries may differ from one examination session to the next. If a 70 per cent score is achieved in Year 1, it becomes an A, the following year this may be regarded as a B or high C depending on the performance of the cohort.
The minimum entry standards for Malaysian students for most of the outlooks from pre-university courses are 5 Credits (Grade C and above). But competitive programmes call for much higher marks.
What is deemed to be a “GOOD ENOUGH” IGCSE grade?
The Bare Minimum and the Competitive Excellence
In fact, many A-Level and Foundation programmes offered by education institutions in Malaysia can be completed by the achievement of 5 Credits (including English). However, in your child’s future if he or she wants to take part in placements in overseas universities, Computer Science, Engineering or Medicine, average grades might not be sufficient.
Scholarships like the one provided by JPA or Petronas are tough to get and come at a high price with a series of TPO A’s. This is because the majority of scholarship applications start doing weeding at 5 A’s and higher.
This is where many parents go wrong. Students earning primarily C grades could still “pass” but may not be able to compete for top college and career opportunities.
Why it matters: Core Subjects.
Academic weights are higher for subjects like Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, particularly for STEM-related courses.
Very good performance in these subjects indicates analytical skills, discipline and problem solving. Indeed, several Universities, even after the completion of A-Levels, keep looking at the IGCSE grades.
Early interventions are crucial if your child is not being successful in these areas now.
Red flags that your child may be falling behind
Not many students all at once do not complete overnight! The symptoms will typically be seen months prior.
Here are a few signs parents should look out for:
- If you are getting c or D grades in regular tests.
- A significant drop in performance in the other subjects, Additional Mathematics or Sciences.
- Lacks understanding of complex problem solving questions
- Despite spending a lot of time studying, low confidence
- Disagreement with the size of the classrooms or general teaching practices.
Many mainstream schools can just not personalise a lesson for each pupil. Some students slip quietly behind, therefore, without the support that they truly require.
To help them with closing the gap and raising their grades.
The Power of Personalised Learning
All children learn in different ways. Not all students will learn through seeing – some require repeated guided practice or explanations of concepts.
Unfortunately, the traditional ‘one size fits all’ model is not one that works well for students requiring more targeted academic support. Hence, many parents choose small group tutoring and subject mentoring specialised IGCSE tuition in Malaysia today.
