How to Answer Structured Questions in IGCSE Science
IGCSE Science papers have a particular sting.
Leaving the exam with an “I knew that” feeling.
And then you get your results, and it doesn’t show.
Let’s be clear: the reason most students aren’t getting top marks isn’t that they can’t understand Physics, Chemistry, or Biology. Because they don’t answer the question.
Structured questions in IGCSE Science are not about understanding, but rather technique. Your understanding of command words, your answer structure, and your answers’ alignment with the mark scheme are critical.
This article will teach you:
- Understand IGCSE Biology command words and exam terminology
- Structure your answers according to the mark scheme
- Use our IGCSE Chemistry and Physics exam tips
- Understand IGCSE Physics calculation questions
IGCSE Exams Secrets: Understanding “Command Words”
Each IGCSE paper is in a language. Their language is command words.
Get them wrong and you might get an idea, but your marks won’t reflect it.
State vs. Describe vs. Explain
- State / Name
Short. Direct. No fluff.
Typically 1 mark = 1 fact. - Describe
Paint the picture. Emphasise patterns, progression or transformations.
Say what you see. - Explain
This is where it counts for your mark.
Provide explanations via science. Not only what, but why.
A common mistake? If you write an “Explain” like a “Describe”. Done wrong, this can lose you 2-3 marks.
Calculate and Determine
Students lose marks at their own risk.
With IGCSE Physics ‘calculate’ questions:
- Write the formula
- Show all workings
- Substitute clearly
- Don’t forget the unit!
Working is essential (no marks without working, even if the answer is right).
The “Marks to Minutes” Rule
There are no marks (or minutes) for greeting duckies. They are a compass.
A 4-mark question expects:
- 4 scientific ideas
- not a single paragraph that explains a single point in detail.
Quick rule:
- 1–2 marks → 1–2 points
- 3–4 marks → 3–4 points
- 5-6 marks → compound explanation with reason
If you aren’t writing more content but more words, you’re losing marks.
Acquiring the Habits of Success in Structured Questions
IGCSE Biology
Precision is everything.
Examiners dislike clειςExaminers don’t like casualspeak:
- Say “turgid”, not “swollen”
- Say “flaccid”, not “soft”
For questions on experiments:
- Name variables (independent, dependent, control)
- Describe how to measure the results
- Relate to the hypothesis
Here lies the problem for most students.
IGCSE Chemistry
Details win marks.
IGCSE Chemistry exam tips:
- Balance equations perfectly
- Use state symbols (s, l, g, aq) where relevant
- For exam questions on reaction rate, tie in to collision theory
For calculations:
Use the step-by-step approach:
mass → moles → ratio → final answer
Omitting steps = losing marks.
IGCSE Physics
Physics rewards structure.
Follow the FWAU method:
- Formula
- Working
- Answer
- Unit
This can get you marks just for the method – even if you get the answer wrong.
For theory questions:
- State the law (Newton’s laws, etc)
- Use it to answer the question
No storytelling. No rambling. Just plain logic.
3 Mistakes to Avoid in IGCSE Science Exams
- Waffling
More words isn’t more points.
They are reading for ideas. - Contradicting Yourself
Any incorrect sentence can invalidate a correct one.
When in doubt, keep it, brief. - Ignoring Context
Don’t write vague explanations.
Relate your answer to the given context.
